AppleCare's Profit Machine: Insurance Priced for Fear, Not Risk
AppleCare's pricing exploits consumer anxiety about repair costs that Apple itself inflates through anti-repair practices.
AppleCare is one of the most profitable product lines at Apple, with estimated margins exceeding 60% β far above the typical 15-25% margins of third-party electronics insurance. The business model is elegant in its circularity: Apple designs devices that are expensive and difficult to repair independently, then sells insurance against those inflated repair costs at prices that far exceed the statistical likelihood of claims.
The Pricing Reality
AppleCare+ for an iPhone 15 Pro Max costs $199 for two years, covering accidental damage with a $29-$99 service fee per incident. Actuarial analysis by independent insurance researchers estimates the average expected repair cost per iPhone over two years at $45-$65, meaning Apple collects roughly three to four times the expected payout in premiums. For MacBook Pro, AppleCare costs $399 for three years, against an estimated expected repair cost of $120-$180. These margins would be scandalous in traditional insurance, where regulators cap loss ratios.
The Manufactured Anxiety
Apple's anti-repair ecosystem makes AppleCare pricing psychologically effective. When third-party repair is difficult or impossible, and Apple's out-of-warranty repair costs are set deliberately high β $549 for an iPhone screen replacement without AppleCare, versus the $29 service fee with coverage β the insurance appears reasonable. But these out-of-warranty prices are themselves inflated by parts pairing, proprietary components, and the absence of competitive repair options. Apple is simultaneously the arsonist and the fire insurance company.

Water damage beyond Apple's specifications, cosmetic damage, battery degradation below Apple's threshold, and loss or theft (requiring the more expensive AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss) are common denial scenarios. Apple Authorized Service Providers report that a meaningful percentage of AppleCare claims are denied on technical grounds, and the appeals process is opaque.
Consumer advocates recommend self-insuring against device damage by setting aside the AppleCare premium in a savings account, using credit card purchase protection programs that often cover accidental damage for free, and considering third-party repair shops for out-of-warranty issues where parts pairing restrictions allow.
