How to Install and Use Tor Browser Safely

Download Tor Browser exclusively from torproject.org. Never install from third-party sites. Verify the download signature if you know how — this prevents tampered versions.

Install and First Launch

Install like any application. On first launch, click 'Connect' for standard use, or 'Configure' if you're in a country that blocks Tor. Bridge relays help bypass censorship.

Understand the Limitations

Tor anonymizes your browsing but is slow. Don't torrent over Tor. Don't maximize the browser window (fingerprinting). Don't log into personal accounts — this defeats anonymity.

Configure Security Level

Click the shield icon and set security level. 'Standard' works for most browsing. 'Safer' disables JavaScript on non-HTTPS sites. 'Safest' disables JavaScript entirely — most secure.

Use .onion Sites

Tor enables access to .onion sites that are only reachable through the Tor network. Legitimate uses include SecureDrop for whistleblowers and privacy-focused services.

Practice Good OpSec

Don't mix Tor browsing with regular browsing in the same session. Close Tor Browser completely when done. Never provide identifying information while using Tor.
