How to Set Up Bitwarden Password Manager
Step-by-step Bitwarden setup guide for 2026. Create your vault, import passwords, install apps, enable 2FA, and audit your security. Free and open source.
Step-by-Step
Create Your Vault
Sign up at bitwarden.com. Choose a strong master password — this is the only password you'll need to remember. Enable the password strength meter and aim for 16+ characters.
Install Browser Extensions
Install the Bitwarden extension for Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or Safari. The extension auto-fills credentials and prompts to save new ones as you browse.
Import Existing Passwords
Export passwords from your current manager (Chrome, 1Password, LastPass, etc.) and import into Bitwarden. Go to Tools > Import Data and select your source format.
Install Mobile Apps
Install Bitwarden on iOS and Android. Enable biometric unlock (Face ID, fingerprint) for quick access. Turn on auto-fill in your device's system settings.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Secure your vault with 2FA. Use an authenticator app (not SMS). Save backup codes in a secure physical location in case you lose your 2FA device.
Audit and Update Weak Passwords
Use Bitwarden's vault health reports to find reused, weak, and breached passwords. Update them one by one using the built-in password generator.
