Create or Log Into Your Proton Account

If you already have a Proton Mail account, you can access Proton Drive immediately by logging in at drive.proton.me. If not, sign up at proton.me and create a new account. The free plan includes one gigabyte of total storage shared across Proton Mail and Drive. Paid plans like Proton Unlimited provide five hundred gigabytes of storage along with access to Proton Mail, Calendar, VPN, and Pass. All files uploaded to Proton Drive are end-to-end encrypted, meaning Proton cannot access your files even if compelled by legal requests.

Install Desktop and Mobile Apps

Download the Proton Drive desktop application for Windows or macOS from proton.me/drive/download. The desktop app creates a sync folder on your computer that automatically uploads and encrypts files to your Proton Drive cloud storage. On mobile, install the Proton Drive app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for on-the-go access to your encrypted files. The mobile app supports automatic photo and video backup, which replaces Google Photos or iCloud Photos with a privacy-respecting alternative that does not scan your images for advertising or machine learning training purposes.

Organize Your File Structure

Create a logical folder hierarchy within Proton Drive before uploading your files. Consider organizing by category such as Documents, Photos, Projects, Financial Records, and Archives. Within each top-level folder, create subfolders for years, clients, or specific projects depending on your workflow. A well-organized structure from the beginning prevents the chaos that often accumulates in cloud storage services over time. Use descriptive folder names and avoid special characters that might cause compatibility issues when syncing across different operating systems and devices.

Upload and Migrate Existing Files

Begin uploading your most important files first, prioritizing sensitive documents like tax returns, contracts, medical records, and financial statements that benefit most from end-to-end encryption. You can upload files through the web interface by dragging and dropping them into the browser window, or by placing them in the desktop sync folder. For large migrations from Google Drive or Dropbox, download your files from those services first and then upload them to Proton Drive. Configure Sharing and Collaboration

Proton Drive allows you to share files and folders securely with others using encrypted sharing links. Right-click any file or folder and select Share to generate a link. You can set an expiration date on shared links and protect them with a password for additional security. Recipients can download shared files without needing a Proton account. For collaborative workflows where multiple people need ongoing access to the same folders, share directly with other Proton users by entering their Proton email address, which provides persistent encrypted access without exposing files through public links.

Set Up Automatic Backups

Configure the Proton Drive desktop app to automatically sync specific folders from your computer, effectively creating an encrypted cloud backup of your most important local files. On mobile, enable automatic camera roll backup in the Proton Drive app settings to ensure every photo and video you take is immediately encrypted and uploaded. Set the upload preference to use WiFi only if you have limited mobile data. Review your sync settings periodically to ensure new folders and file types are included in your backup configuration as your storage needs evolve over time.
