How to Set Up Signal for Private Messaging
Complete Signal setup guide for 2026. Register, configure privacy settings, link desktop, and invite contacts to the most private messaging app available.
Step-by-Step
Install Signal
Download Signal from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). You can also install the desktop app for Windows, Mac, or Linux. You need a phone number to register.
Register Your Number
Open Signal and register with your phone number. Signal sends a verification code via SMS. Once verified, create a PIN to secure your account recovery.
Configure Privacy Settings
Go to Settings > Privacy. Enable 'Screen Lock' with biometrics. Turn on 'Disappearing Messages' by default. Disable read receipts and typing indicators if you prefer maximum privacy.
Set Up Desktop App
Install Signal Desktop and link it to your phone by scanning a QR code. Desktop messages are synced and encrypted. Note: message history before linking won't appear on desktop.
Invite Your Contacts
Signal works best when your contacts use it too. Send invites through the app. Start with close friends and family. Share your reason for switching — privacy is compelling.
Create Group Chats
Replace your WhatsApp and Messenger groups. Create Signal groups with admin controls, disappearing messages, and the confidence that no corporation reads your conversations.
