How to Switch from Gmail to Proton Mail

Create Your Proton Account

Sign up at proton.me. Choose a plan: the free tier includes 1GB storage and 150 messages/day. Paid plans unlock custom domains and more storage.

Import Your Gmail Data

Use Proton's Easy Switch tool to import emails, contacts, and calendars directly from Gmail. The process runs in the background and preserves folder structure.

Set Up Email Forwarding

In Gmail settings, enable forwarding to your new Proton address. This ensures you don't miss emails during the transition period. Keep this active for 3-6 months.

Update Critical Accounts

Change your email address on banking, government, healthcare, and other critical accounts first. Then update shopping, social media, and subscriptions.

Configure Proton Apps

Install Proton Mail, Calendar, and Drive apps on all devices. Set up Proton Bridge if you want to use a desktop email client like Thunderbird or Apple Mail.

Disable Gmail After Transition

After 3-6 months of forwarding, turn off Gmail forwarding and set up a vacation responder with your new address. Consider fully deleting the Google account.
